The project was initiated to support methodological work on developing a new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator (10.7.1) on worker-paid recruitment costs. The surveys of migrant workers conducted in multiple bilateral corridors between 2015 and 2017 provide new systematic evidence of financial and some non-financial costs incurred by workers to obtain jobs abroad. Like the rest of the world, Sudan has been experiencing the unprecedented social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results from the first six...Like the rest of the world, Sudan has been experiencing the unprecedented social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. From restrictions on movement to school closures and lockdowns, the economic situation worsened, and commodity prices soared across the country. Results from the first six rounds of the High-Frequency Phone survey indicated that household welfare was negatively affected. The situation led to the loss of employment and income, decreased access to essential commodities and services, and food insecurity, particularly among the poor and vulnerable Sudanese. Moreover, the inability to access food and medicine degraded in July/August 2021 despite a slight amelioration in February/April 2021.
After COVID-19 in 2020, Sudan experienced situations that are more likely to compromise the recovery process. Political instability, unrest, and protests occurred before and after the military takeover in October 2021. Meanwhile, Sudan Central Bank devalued the currency, which may increase the already high commodities price. Besides, Sudan encountered historic flooding since the onset of the rainy season between May and June 2022. To monitor and assess the dynamics of the impacts of the country's economic and political situation (high inflation, social unrest, food shortages, asset loss, displacement, etc.) on households' welfare, another round of the Sudan High-Frequency Phone survey took place in June to August 2022.
Similar to the six previous rounds, the survey was conducted using mobile phones and covered all 18 states of Sudan. Round 7 sample is composed of 2816 Households from both urban and rural areas of Sudan. This sample allows us to draw statistical inferences about the Sudanese population at the national and rural/urban levels. The risk of nonresponse was a concern, so efforts were made to minimize this risk, including follow-up with respondents who failed to respond and keep the interviews short (15–20 minutes) to reduce respondent fatigue.
The questions are similar to the previous six rounds of the High-Frequency Phone survey but with added context. Households are asked about the key channels through which individuals and households are expected to be affected by the exchange rate distortions, country political instability, or flooding that occurred in May/June 2022, as well as how they have recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic impacts. Furthermore, questions cover a range of topics/themes including, but not limited to, health conditions, access to health facilities, access to other social services, availability of common food and non-food items (including medicines), nutrition and food security, employment/labor, income, assets, coping strategies, remittances, subjective welfare, climate/weather events, and the safety nets assistance.View MoreView Less
This study aims to develop a new methodology for calculating the economic costs of unhealthy diets, to improve on current methodologies. This study aims to develop a new methodology for calculating the economic costs of unhealthy diets, to improve on current methodologies. It utilizes relatively new, holistic, measures of diet quality. Following development of the methodology, we test it out using cross-country data from public sources, including one of the new more holistic measures of diet quality, the Global Dietary Recommendations Score (GDRS) which are publicly available. We examine whether the GDRS is significantly associated with measures of overweight and obesity, or with NCD risk factors (hypertension and diabetes). These other data are also publicly available from sources such as UNICEF, FAO and WHO. The results are promising, although there are limitations in using cross-country data, and we plan next to do similar analysis using a slightly different diet quality metric, within one or more countries.

The hazard assessment uses global and local datasets, hydrological model TOPKAPI, Extreme Value Analysis and the hydraulic model CA2D. As well as producing return period fluvial flood hazard maps for the current climate and for selected climate change projections, with and without flood defences, a regional pluvial analysis has been conducted and realistic flood scenarios analyzed. The exposure database developed during this project can be used at regional scale, national scale or sub-national scale (e.g., at Oblast scale). A machine learning approach was taken to mapping landslide susceptibility, which was then used to assess the exposure of assets to landslide across the region, and in analysis of potential landslide damming of rivers. Additionally, selected detailed landslide scenarios were simulated at ket sites of high landslide hazard. - Reduce the population growth rate less than 2 % peryear
- Reduce the infant mortaility (under 5 years old) 0,81% (1990) to 0,55%; and from 0,46% (1990) to 0,3% (under one year old)
- Reduce the mortality rate of women concerning the pregnancy and maternity
- Reduce the malnutrition of children under 5years old from 51,5% at present to 40% in 1995 and under 30% by the year of 2000. Heavy malnutrition should not be existed by the year of 2000.
- Population can access to safe water resources from 43% (1990) to 82% of which 40% to 80% in rural areas. Population use sanitary latrine from 22% (1990) to 65% of which in rural areas from 15% to 60%
- 90 percent of children complete the endeavor universal first level education before the age of 15, and the rest should complete the third grade. By the year of 2000 no children at the age of 15 will be illiterate
- Improve the cultural, spiritual life of the children, to ensure that 30% of communes (by the year of 1995) and 50% of communes (by the year of 2000) have entertaining place for children

Using data from a panel of 687 jobseekers and randomized access to the support intervention,...We study the impact of a light-touch job facilitation intervention that supported young female jobseekers during the application process for factory work in a newly constructed industrial park in Ethiopia. Using data from a panel of 687 jobseekers and randomized access to the support intervention, we find that treated applicants are more likely to be employed and have higher earnings and savings 8 months after baseline, although these impacts are short-lived. Four years later, the effects on employment and income largely dissipated. Our results suggest that young women face significant barriers to engaging in factory work in the short run that a simple job facilitation intervention can help overcome. In the long term, however, these jobs do not offer a better alternative than other income-generating opportunities.View MoreView Less
