As part of the “Geospatial Assessment of Women Employment and Business Opportunities in the Energy Sector” project, open-source Gender-related spatial data was collected for 31 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) across the globe, resulting in curated and thoroughly documented geodatabases (GDBs) that are now ready to be explored! 
Fifty-nine spatial layers were identified and then researched for each country, covering the following categories: Demographics and Population | Renewable Energy | Energy Access | Education | Jobs and Finance | Digital Inclusion | Transportation | Safety | Amenities | Climate/Earth | Law/Policy/Government. 


However, not every country GDB contains all 59 data layers, as this was dependent on the availability of open-source data in each SIDS. Users are encouraged to check the accompanying metadata excel file for more information on the datasets in each GDB, the vintage, and the

Uganda’s Vision 2040 aims to transform the economy through industrialization. The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) is well positioned to be the engine to drive this positive structural transformation. The capital city region is the main urban area in Uganda capable of delivering scale economies in terms of concentrated demand, specialization, diversity and depth of skills and innovation. Greater Kampala is currently following a broad economic development strategy set out in both the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) strategy and the GKMA Development Framework. Under the economic growth theme, KCCA is seeking to develop a more specific city economic development strategy that will provide a framework for sustained economic growth driven by an efficient infrastructure network. Also, the Government of Uganda (GoU), recognizing the need for a coordinated effort toward economic growth in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA), has tasked the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Office of the Prime Minister, KCCA and relevant Local Governments to develop an integrated framework for the development of GKMA.

To assist KCCA’s and other GKMA stakeholder’s efforts, this report aims to do three things. Firstly, it seeks to profile Greater Kampala’s economy, emphasizing its importance to Uganda’s development and goals outlined in Vision 2040. Secondly, the report identifies the key constraints and opportunities to growth and competitiveness for Kampala’s firms. Finally, the report provides policymakers with practical actions to unlock the city’s economic potential. These recommendations focus specifically on what local governments can do but also addresses complementary
national-level actions.

In order to support the development of an economic development strategy for the Greater Kampala metro region, an informal sector survey was undertaken between June 2016 and June 2017 to provide policymakers with analytical information on the prominent sectors within the city. The survey was designed to produce representative estimates for key indicators of the greater Kampala as a whole. The informal sector module of the National Manpower Survey (NMPS) implemented by UBOS was extended to include questions on household-based enterprises. The module focuses on skill levels, remuneration, training and working conditions of those in the informal sector. The survey interviewed 2,243 informal businesses, randomly drawn based on a two-stage stratified sample.
This dataset is part of the Non-Lending Technical Assistance (NLTA) Project on the Economic Performance of African Cities supported by the U.K. Department for International Development.
