Infrastructure spending needs

Description:

This data compiles infrastructure investment needs in five sectors and six world regions, for three spending scenarios that vary in terms of ambition and efficiency in infrastructure service delivery. It distinguishes between new capital investment and maintenance, and provides data in 2015 US dollars and in percent of regions' GDP. Please refer to Rozenberg, Julie, and Marianne Fay, eds. 2019. Beyond the Gap: How Countries Can Afford the Infrastructure They Need While Protecting the Planet, Sustainable Infrastructure Series (Washington, DC: World Bank) for a detailed description.

Ad Valorem Equivalent of Non-Tariff Measures

Description:

The ad valorem equivalent (AVE) of non-tariff measures (NTMs) is the uniform tariff that will result in the same trade impacts on the import of a product due to the presence of the NTMs. In other words, the AVEs represent the additional costs that the presence of NTMs has on imports. The AVE estimation is based on data in the TRAINS database. To minimize time inconsistencies, the analysis utilizes a reduced sample of NTMs data collected between 2012 and 2016. The data is transformed in a cross section database spanning about 40 importing countries plus the European Union, about 200...

Worldwide Bureaucracy Indicators

Description:

The Worldwide Bureaucracy Indicators (WWBI) is a dataset on public sector employment and wages that can help researchers and development practitioners gain a better understanding of the personnel dimensions of state capability, the footprint of the public sector on the overall labor market, and the fiscal implications of the government wage bill. The WWBI aim to fill the gap in information on the personnel of the state by providing more objective measures drawing on administrative data and household surveys, thereby complementing existing, expert perception-based approaches.

Belt and Road Initiative Trade Costs Database

Description:

This paper studies the impact of transport infrastructure projects of the Belt and Road Initiative on shipment times and trade costs. Based on a new data on completed and planned Belt and Road transport projects, Geographic Information System analysis is used to estimate shipment times before and after the Belt and Road Initiative. Two sets of data are computed to address different research questions: a global database based on an analysis of 1,000 cities in 191 countries and 47 sectors and a regional database that focuses on more granular information (1,818 cities) for Belt and Road...

Human Capital Index

Description:

The Human Capital Index (HCI) database provides data at the country level for each of the components of the Human Capital Index as well as for the overall index, disaggregated by gender. The index measures the amount of human capital that a child born today can expect to attain by age 18, given the risks of poor health and poor education that prevail in the country where she lives. It is designed to highlight how improvements in current health and education outcomes shape the productivity of the next generation of workers, assuming that children born today experience over the next 18 years...

Efficiency of Public Spending in Education, Health, and Infrastructure

Description:

Governments of developing countries typically spend between 20 and 30 percent of gross domestic product. Hence, small changes in the efficiency of public spending could have a major impact on aggregate productivity growth and gross domestic product levels. Therefore, measuring efficiency and comparing input-output combinations of different decision-making units becomes a central challenge. This paper gauges efficiency as the distance between observed input-output combinations and an efficiency frontier estimated by means of the Free Disposal Hull and Data Envelopment Analysis techniques....

Bank Credit Allocation in Latin America and the Caribbean

Description:

Despite their importance, data on the structure of bank credit by maturity are scarce. For Latin America and the Caribbean, data are particularly difficult to obtain, as few banks report loan maturity data in commercial data sets such as Bankscope. With support from the Association of Supervisors of Banks of the Americas, this study assembled a novel data set on the structure of bank credit allocation in Latin America and the Caribbean covering 21 countries during 2004-14. This paper uses Bankscope and International Financial Statistics data to extended the coverage to more than 100...

Annual time series of these deforestation rates were constructed from recently published high-resolution data on forest clearing from Hansen et al (2013), the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA); a shapefile identifying tropical forest areas, drawn from Hansen, et al. (2003); and the database of Global...

Description:

This Neighborhood Fragility Index (NFI) is based on the Fragility States Index (FSI) 2017 of the Fund for Peace. It provides a better understanding of neighbor quality of each country.

The quality of the neighborhood affects the trajectory of FCS countries through two channels: (1) A fragile neighborhood may increase the fragility of the affected country and perpetuate the conflict through illegal flows of weapons and fighters; (2) A stable neighborhood can provide the FCS countries with trading partners during and immediately after the conflict. It can also be a source of...
