Economic Fitness

Economic Fitness (EF) is both a measure of a country’s diversification and ability to produce complex goods on a globally competitive basis. Countries with the highest levels of EF have capabilities to produce a diverse portfolio of products, ability to upgrade into ever-increasing complex goods, tend to have more predictable long-term growth, and to attain good competitive position relative to other countries. Countries with low EF levels tend to suffer from poverty, low capabilities, less predictable growth, low value-addition, and trouble upgrading and diversifying faster than other...

WPS1448 - Quantifying Environmental Performance Survey Results

For this exercise, we have randomly selected 31 United Nations Conference on Environmental and Development (UNCED) reports from the total of 145. These 31 range from highly industrialized to extremely poor, they are drawn from every world region, and they range in size and diversity from China to Jamaica.

Our survey considers the state of policy and performance in four environmental dimensions: Air, Water, Land and Living Resources. We analyze the apparent state of policy as it affects the interactions between these four environmental dimensions and five activity categories:...

WPS78738 - Modeling the effects of physician emigration on human development

This paper quantifies the effects of physician emigration on human development indicators in developing countries. First, the geographical distribution and evolution of physician brain drain is documented for the period 1991-2004. Second, random and fixed effects models were employed to investigate the effects of physicians in the home countries and abroad on child mortality and vaccination rates. And third, models were estimated to investigate migration induced incentives and possible brain gain in the medical sector. The results showed positive effects of migration prospects on medical...

WPS77544 - Measuring international skilled migration : a new database controlling for age of entry

Recent data on international migration of skilled workers define skilled migrants by education level without distinguishing whether they acquired their education in the home or the host country. This article uses immigrants' age of entry as a proxy for where they acquired their education. Data on age of entry are available from a subset of receiving countries that together represent 77 percent of total skilled immigration to countries of the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). Using these data and a simple gravity model to estimate the age-of-entry structure of...

WPS4613 - A gendered assessment of the brain drain

This paper updates and extends the Docquier-Marfouk data set on inter-national migration by educational attainment. The authors use new sources, homogenize definitions of what a migrant is, and compute gender-disaggregated indicators of the brain drain. Emigration stocks and rates are provided by level of schooling and gender for 195 source countries in 1990 and 2000. The data set can be used to capture the recent trend in women's skilled migration and to analyze its causes and consequences for developing countries. The .findings show that women represent an increasing share of the OECD...

WPS6979 - WTO Trade Flows and Trade Disputes

The database from Bown and Reynolds (2014, "Trade Flows and Trade Disputes") maps information on the policies that triggered WTO dispute settlement actions between 1995 and 2011 to highly disaggregated, product-level trade data so as to potentially learn from more precise measures of market access. This mapping includes three important elements i) information on the timing of the respondent’s policy change which triggered the dispute; ii) information on the different types of WTO-violating policies imposed, particularly whether they are ‘global’ policies (imposed against all trading...
