Jamaica - Population Census Jamaica 2001 - IPUMS Subset

IPUMS-International is an effort to inventory, preserve, harmonize, and disseminate census microdata from around the world. The project has collected the world's largest archive of publicly available census samples. The data are coded and documented consistently across countries and over time to facillitate comparative research. IPUMS-International makes these data available to qualified researchers free of charge through a web dissemination system. The IPUMS project is a collaboration of the Minnesota Population Center, National Statistical Offices, and international data archives. Major funding is provided by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Additional support is provided by the University of Minnesota Office of the Vice President for Research, the Minnesota Population Center, and Sun Microsystems.

Questionnaires:
There are 2 forms. (1) The short form contains questions which will be asked of the entire population. (2) The long form contains all questions on the short form and questions which will be administered only to 10% of the population identified on the selection of a 10% sample of all E.Ds.
Response Rates:
COVERAGE: 100% of population and housing characteristics; 10% receiving long forms, including all collective dwellings
Sampling Procedure:
MICRODATA SOURCE: Statistical Institute of Jamaica SAMPLE DESIGN: The sample consists only of data from long forms, filled by the population in 10% of enumeration districts. SAMPLE UNIT: Household SAMPLE FRACTION: 10% (adjustment for undercount implicit in the sample weights suggests a true density of approximately 8%) SAMPLE SIZE (person records): 205,179
Study Type:
Population and Housing Census [hh/popcen]
Unit of Analysis:
Housing unit, dwellings, and householdsUNITS IDENTIFIED:- Dwellings: Yes- Vacant units: No- Households: Yes- Individuals: Yes- Group quarters: Yes- Special populations: Yes (Unsettled population)UNIT DESCRIPTIONS:- Dwellings: A dwelling unit is any building or separate and independet part of a building in which a person or group of persons living at the time of the Census.- Households: A household consists of one person who lives alone or a group of persons who, as a unit, jointly occupies the whole or part of a dwelling unit, who have common arrangements for housekeeping, and who generally share at least one meal. The household may be composed of related persons only, of unrelated persons, or of a combination of both.- Group quarters: Non-private dwelling or group dwellings are defined as living quarters in which the occupants live collectively for disciplinary, health, educational, religious, military, work or other reasons. Living collectively means that they usually eat common meals and share common domestic services.
Universe:
All Jamaicans and non-Jamaican whose usual place of residence was in Jamaica even if they were temporarily (less than 6 months) abroad at the time of the census. Both foreign diplomats in Jamaica and Jamaican diplomatic personnel serving in the missions overseas were excluded
Version Description:
Version 6.4. The datasets contain selected variables from the original census microdata plus harmonized variables from the IPUMS-International database. In v6.4, the research team continued to carry out improvements to geography, providing harmonized geographic units for the second administrative level for roughly half the countries. More information about IPUMS geography variables is available here. Also, approximately 100 integrated variables were renamed. Affected variables with their current and previous names are listed here. Geography variable also underwent wholesale renaming. In this update, IPUMS added 19 new samples for Armenia, Austria, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Mozambique, Paraguay, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, and Spain. Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Paraguay were newly added countries to IPUMS. Samples for other countries extend pre-existing series for those countries.
Weighting:
Computed by Minnesota Population Center. Weights are the ratio of longform to adjusted total population in each strata (defined by age, sex, parish, and urban status).
